Concepts in Chapter 11

A concept I found interesting or useful in Chapter 11 is learning about the use of presentation media. We use presentation media to draw attention to our topic, get a emotional reaction from the audience, clarify key points, have the correct facts & figures, & help the audience understand the main points in the presentation. I also found useful the different types of presentation media & the advantages & limitations of it. You need to choose the most effective one for your speech that will help get the correct idea for your speech. The different types are the overhead transparency, flip chart and poster, white board/ chalkboard, document camera, video, handout, model, audio media, digital slide, & real-time web access. Each one of those can be used it is just the matter of which is the best one for your presentation that matters the most.

  1. Hello Haightetak!

I'm glad you talked about the use of presentation media; helps me get a better understanding of it. It does help draw attention to our topic, get a emotional reaction from the audience, clarify key points, have the correct facts and figures, and help the audience understand the main points. All given straight forward to the audience. It's helpful that you listed the different types of presentation medias because I tend to think of powerpoints and posters only. I have used handouts once, but usually stick with posters to bring out my artistic side :). The most common media I see now in use is powerpoint and it's probably easier and more helpful.

  2. I agree that the use of presentation media is very beneficial for the success of a speech. I generally like to use pictures on my Powerpoint presentations because long passages will bore the audience. I also believe that the speaker should do the speaking, not the presentation slides. Pictures and videos are much more intriguing. I also enjoy using Powerpoint the most for my presentations because it organizes facts and points across smoothly. I have never used anything beyond Powerpoint such as Keynote, but I am sure that Keynote is effective depending on the topic of the presentation. Fortunately using Powerpoint is a must for our next speech. Nice blog Haitetak :)

  3. It’s nice to have something visual to see as the speaker is talking about their topic. Being able to see an object or some pictures really helps me get an idea of what the speaker is talking about. Having so many types of media makes presentations more interesting. The limitations for media make it seem kind of a hassle to use. If you use the handouts too early no one will pay attention, if digital slides are too long it can get boring and such. I agree with you that it depends on how it is used and how much practice was put into it.

  4. Hey.
I agree with you that we do use presentation media to draw attention to our topic. I believe that presentation media helps the audience get a better view of what you are talking about. It also depends on the type of speech you are giving or even how you want the audience to see the point that you are trying to get across. What I didn’t know is that there are more types of presentation media then I thought. I haven’t really seen the others that you have mentioned except the power point and poster and maybe a hand out but that is about it.

  5. I also agree that presentation media is useful and constructive. I believe there are times when it is to your advantage to use PowerPoint. There are times when technical information and concrete images can help you explain your point better than words can. I believe that people love visuals because it helps them put an image to an idea. If you are standing in front of an audience describing your innovative thoughts, showing a picture or photo with the highlighted points helps get your point across and your listeners are likely to sit up and take notice. Long speeches tend to become boring and people tune out, but when utilizing a tool such as PowerPoint, you can effectively capture your audience's attention if done properly.
